Chemical peels typically contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) designed to exfoliate and renew the skin.
The acids in the chemical peel work to dissolve the bonds between skin cells to varying depths depending on the strength, resulting in the shedding of old skin. The effect is a revealing of smoother, brighter skin underneath.
Chemical peels are considered safe when administered by trained medical professionals. As with any medical procedure, there can be potential side effects or risks, which Nurse Heather will discuss during your consultation.
The peels that are offered at skintap are suitable for all skin types but some pre-peel preparation may be required. Anyone with active skin infections or recently had a laser procedure should not have a peel until they have fully healed. A consultation is always necessary with a chemical peel.
The most common areas of treatment include the face and neck but almost anywhere on the body can be treated. Expect different healing journey with each area.
Chemical peels can improve a whole host of skin concerns such as:
Downtime depends on the peel strength. Mild peels have little to no downtime, while stronger peels may cause redness, flaking or peeling for a few days. We will recommend tips to minimise downtime and get you back to regular activities sooner.
The number of sessions can vary depending on your specific goals and the condition of your skin. Typically, a course of two to three treatments is recommended, with a 14 -21 day interval between sessions. It is then advisable to have a treatment every 6-9 months thereafter for maintenance.
Typically, mild peels provide noticeable smoothing within a few days, while medium-depth peels yield results in 1-2 weeks. Deeper peels can take 2-4 weeks to reveal improvements. Multiple treatments may be needed for lasting anti-ageing or, acne or pigmentation benefits.
With continued excellent home care and sun protection, chemical peel results often endure for several months. Mild peels provide temporary improvements, while medium-deep peels can elevate skin quality for 6-12 months. For long-term anti-ageing, a recommended series offers the best outcomes .
When applied, most chemical peels have a mild stinging or tingling sensation. Practitioners are trained to ensure your comfort throughout the process
